UNATAN RANK:

Unatan society is organized by warrior ranks, and then by secondary jobs. Warrior rank is indicated by stylized notches in traditional ceremonial clothes and weapons. Color denotes both warrior sub-categories and secondary duties. Once a warrior stops his or her formal training, that warrior retains status in the Unatan ranking system, barring unforeseen circumstances or further training.

For instance, Queen Garyn wears a yellow longcoat (the color of Royals) with black notching (the color of Masters, including the Weaponmasters and the Gauntlet) in the shape of a three-pronged crown with an oval cut into it (triple notched cabochon, which indicates her association with the Royal bloodline). She always wore yellow with a triple notched cabochon notch design (in apprentice colors), but she had to earn the black Master notching.

CLOTHES:

Unatan clothes are first and foremost tied to the function of a citizen's activity. Function is placed before form, therefore clothing in this world is fairly simple. Some difference is made between the colors of a training pledge (tan) and a Master (black), but a pledge is permitted to wear their "stealth darks" (which are black) if their assignment calls for it. Use of color among regular warriors and citizens is more prevalent during festivals and ceremonies to aid in recognition.

ARMOR:

Armor is an extension of a Unatan's everyday dress (with the exception of Rowan and a few others). From the thin metal undersuit in everyday wear to the heaviest battle armor, Unatans follow strict codes of constant preparation for battle. Function applies here, too. However, in comparison to simple tunics, breeches and boots, Unatan armor is often intricate in both design and appearance.
